Are you pre-diabetic?
The following are risk factors for having diabetes or pre-diabetes. If two or more apply to you, you should be tested. Anyone age 45 or older should have a fasting blood glucose test at least every three years. Remember: if you have pre-diabetes, lifestyle changes and treatment can prevent or delay developing type 2 diabetes. If you already have diabetes, treatment can reverse the condition and prevent much of the damage to your heart, eyes, kidneys, and nervous system.
Risk factors:
• Age 45 or older.
• Overweight or obese
• Family history of diabetes, especially a parent or sibling
• Ethnic origin is African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or
Hispanic American/Latino.
• Gestational diabetes, or given birth to baby weighing nine pounds or more.
• High blood pressure: 140/90 or higher
• Abnormal cholesterol levels; HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol) is
35 or lower, or triglyceride level is 250 or higher.
• Physically inactive. Exercise fewer than three times a week.
• Weight gain of 20 pounds or more in one year.
• Difficulty losing weight.
• Hypoglycemia
• Crave sweets and carbohydrates.
• Polycystic ovary syndrome
